A close-coupled silencer for a rear engine vehicle has been optimised for weight and is currently being implemented in serial production for a timespan set to last several years.
The weight optimisation is primarily achieved by reducing the silencer envelope thickness to 0.6mm of stainless steel and the pipe wall thickness to 0.8mm. Careful design and testing have enabled maintenance of the high level of performance.
BOSAL's design features and achieved benefits
- Weight saving through use of thin stainless steel (0.6mm)
- High corrosion and temperature resistance
- Increased lifetime expectation
- Optimised material usage and minimal leakage through laser welding process
- Close-coupled location
